Andinismo to Alpamayo

Climbing Alpamayo in 7 days

07 Days / 06 Nights

The most beautiful mountain in the world, one look at the southwest face of Alpamayo and any climber in the world would be interested in attempting to scale this remarkable peak. The wildly striated faces combine with the knife-shaped ridges to form one of the most remarkable peaks in the world.

Climbing Alpamayo, at an elevation of 19,512 feet, can be one of the highlights of a mountaineer’s career.

Itinerary

This 3-hour trip takes us through beautiful farming communities as we head between the thorns of the Cordillera Negra and the Cordillera Blanca. After organizing our donkeys, we walk with backpacks to Llama Corral (3750 m.), where we camp for the night.

A fairly short day, about 3 to 4 hours of backpacking. Base camp is at 4200 meters in a valley at the base of Alpamayo on the opposite side of the route. Base camp is picturesque, with vegetation, running water and toilets.

From base camp, the route follows a moraine ridge and crosses rock slabs along the edge of the glacier until reaching an area of platforms for tents (3 hours). This camping area is very limited and we could choose to climb up to the camp at the pass in a single day.

The route from the moraine camp continues on ice and, before reaching a 300-metre snow corridor, leads to the col between Alpamayo and nearby Quitaraju (6040 m). This section can be, at times, the most technical and difficult of the route. After reaching the col, there is a short descent to reach the high camp.

We will leave camp at 2am and head up the steep summit wall, which offers 360 metres of fun technical climbing to the summit. We will camp at the high camp.

Today we will descend to base camp (4 hours), where lunch awaits us, and in the afternoon we will have time to relax.

We walked to Cashapampa and then returned to Huaraz.

Time to relax after the climb and celebrate. Return to Huaraz.
